Title: San Francisco Bay - 1956 Habitat
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: Map
Description:
Abstract:
This data set consists of 1956 habitat types for 20 USGS 7.5-minute quadrangles in the San Francisco Bay area, California. The 1956 habitat types were converted from the Wetlands Analytical Mapping System (WAMS) format to Digital Line Graph (DLG) format, and from DLG format to ARC/INFO coverages. This metadata record documents geospatial legacy data to the extent practicable, as required by Executive Order 12906, "Coordinating Geographic Data Acquisition and Access: The National Spatial Data Infrastructure," dated April 11, 1994. [Polygonal Data]
Purpose:
This data set will be used with other GIS digital data layers, and simulation models of sea level rise, to predict the effects of climate change on fish and wildlife habitat in the San Francisco Bay area. The products developed in this study will facilitate long-term planning to acquire and manage habitat for important species in the San Francisco Bay area.

The 1956 habitat types were acquired from the USGS National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC), Lafayette, LA, in WAMS format. Data conversion to DLG and ARC/INFO formats was completed at the USGS-FORT, Fort Collins, CO.

Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The attribute accuracy is tested by manually comparing hard copy plots of the digital data with the source materials. When attributes cannot be visually verified on plots they are interactively queried and verified on screen. In addition, the attributes are compared against a master set of valid attributes.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
ARC/INFO software is used to create and maintain topological relationships between features. There are no duplicate features, but coincident lines are maintained between data layers where appropriate. Polygonal features begin and end at the same point, contain no overshoots or undershoots, and contain a single label. Linear features are continuous where appropriate, i.e., dangling arcs are removed if they are not required.
Completeness_Report:
ARC/INFO export files of 1956 habitat types for 20 USGS 7.5-minute quadrangles in the San Francisco Bay area, California, were acquired from NWRC personnel in Lafayette, LA.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The horizontal positional accuracy is tested by visual comparison of hard copy check plots to the source materials and verifying the location of the data on-screen relative to other data layers in the same geographic area.

Process_Description:
The 1956 habitat types were manually interpreted, drafted, and digitized by the USFWS NWI for the USGS, NWRC, Lafayette, LA. These data were digitized using the WAMS software program and converted to DLG format. The DLG files were later converted to ARC/INFO coverages by the FORT for use in the GIS data analysis for the San Francisco Bay Climate Change Project. All maps in the study area were joined into a single map file. Neat lines were removed and attributes and arcs along map edges were verified.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
The USFWS NWI "Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States" was used to describe the wetland types in this data set. The alphanumeric attribute codes identify the wetland system, subsystem, class, subclass, and modifier, when applicable. Example attribute codes: L1OWV, E2BB, PEM, M1OW, etc. In addition to the NWI wetland classes, several upland types are identified, such as: UA (Upland Agriculture), UB (Upland Barren), UF (Upland Forested), UR (Upland Range), UU (Upland Urban).
